Palestinian institutions call for accountability for Israel over death of prisoner Ahmed Hamaydat
Palestinian prisoner organizations demand an independent investigation into the death of Ahmed Hamaydat in Israeli prisons.

Palestinian institutions concerned with prisoners' affairs called on Wednesday for an independent investigation and accountability for Israel regarding the death of prisoner Ahmed Hamaydat (28 years old) inside its prisons, in a joint statement issued by the Prisoners' Club, Al-Zamir, and the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Commission affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The institutions emphasized that Hamaydat's death inside Israeli prisons necessitates a serious and independent investigation and accountability for those responsible, noting that Israeli authorities informed Hamaydat's family of his death on October 18, but continue to withhold official information and refuse to respond to competent Palestinian authorities.

For her part, the family learned of their son's death from one of the prisoners in Abu Kabir prison south of Tel Aviv, where he had been held since his arrest on September 30 last year, confirming that Hamaydat was suffering from a difficult health condition and that the prison administration refused to transfer him for treatment before he was assaulted by a guard.

The family pointed out that their son did not suffer from health problems before his arrest, stressing the necessity of revealing the circumstances of his death and identifying those responsible, amid escalating policies targeting Palestinian prisoners and depriving them of protection guarantees and healthcare since the start of the Gaza war in 2023.

The Commission reported that an autopsy was performed on the prisoner's body, which the family received on Tuesday, without obtaining details regarding the autopsy report so far, while approximately 9,350 prisoners, including 350 children and 90 female prisoners, are held in Israeli prisons suffering from torture and medical neglect that has led to the deaths of dozens.

The institutions stressed that this death occurs within a system of torture, persecution, and denial of treatment, noting that this Israeli behavior exacerbates the family's suffering and raises questions about the circumstances of the death and responsibility for it.
