The Youth and Sports Committee in the People's Council today, Wednesday, held discussions with a number of Syrian youth on ways to enhance their participation in political and legislative life, and to convey their voices to state institutions, thereby contributing to their involvement in decision-making, drafting legislation, and proposing laws that meet their aspirations and support their role in building a new Syria.
The Role of Youth in Building Syria
The Secretary-General of the People's Council, Muayad Habib, emphasized in a statement to SANA the importance of the youth's role in building a new Syria, considering them closest to the reality and problems people face. He noted that the youth presented several written recommendations during the meeting, which will be referred to specialized committees, with follow-up to be conducted through coordination between the committee, participants, and the Council.
Habib pointed out that the discussion addressed the role of the Ministry of Sports and Youth in establishing institutions concerned with youth issues and problems, allowing them to play an active role. It also explored ways to connect youth with the three branches of state power: legislative, executive, and judicial, to convey their voices, raise their problems, and follow up on the issues they raise.
Youth Participation in Drafting and Discussing Legislation
For his part, the Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee and People's Council member, Wajdi Zaydou, indicated that the meeting clarified for participants the committee's working mechanism and its legislative role. He proposed a coordination and cooperation mechanism for youth participation in drafting and discussing legislation, highlighting the responsibility placed on youth to propose laws that serve their aspirations and support their participation in society, such as the Youth Volunteer Law and the Sports Investment Law.
Participant Abdullah Al-Nuaiman explained that the discussions addressed vital issues regarding youth representation and presence in the People's Council, emphasizing the need to achieve actual representation that reflects their aspirations, away from the formalistic frameworks that prevailed during the era of the fallen regime.
Participant Majd Jamous clarified that the importance of the meeting lies in conveying the voices of Syrian youth of all ages to the People's Council, raising their concerns and obstacles. She expressed hope that the proposed ideas would be translated into concrete steps on the ground, contributing to activating the youth's role in decision-making and enhancing their participation in political issues and the work of the People's Council.
The Youth and Sports Committee was formed on July 30, pursuant to Decision No. 109 of 2026 issued by the Chairman of the People's Council, Abdul Hamid Al-Awak. It is specialized in discussing youth issues, their needs and priorities, and enhancing their active participation in public and legislative work.
