Yerevan-SANA
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed on Thursday his country's hope to sign and ratify a peace treaty with Azerbaijan before 2031, a move aimed at normalizing relations between the two countries after decades of territorial conflict.
Specific Timeframes
Agence France-Presse quoted Pashinyan as saying at a cabinet meeting: "Signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan is one of the most important issues for the government and for me personally." The Armenian Prime Minister clarified, stating: "I have set myself a specific goal and timeline, which is to resolve this issue before 2031, and I see this possibility as viable, otherwise I would not have raised this issue."
Details of the Preliminary Agreement
The two countries initialled a peace agreement during a summit held at the White House, hosted by US President Donald Trump in August 2025, although it has not yet been formally signed or ratified. The agreement stipulates that both countries commit to respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, withdrawing any territorial claims, and establishing diplomatic relations.
Regional Normalization
He noted that reaching a final agreement would pave the way for normalizing relations and opening transport and trade corridors in the strategically important South Caucasus region. Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have experienced political and military tensions over decades due to the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
On his part, negotiations involving the countries under international patronage led to understandings regarding the normalization of relations, establishing peace, and enhancing economic cooperation and regional connectivity between the two sides.
Regional Context
In this context, normalization between Yerevan and Baku remains the focus of wide international attention due to the strategic importance of the South Caucasus region, where concerned parties seek lasting stability that guarantees sovereignty rights and prevents the recurrence of armed conflicts.
