Peanut Harvest Begins in Al-Ghab with 10,000 Tons Expected
Peanut harvesting starts in Al-Ghab, Hama, with 10,797 tons expected from 3,470 hectares amid cost and water challenges.

Harvesting operations for the current agricultural season's peanut crop have begun in the Al-Ghab area in the countryside of Hama governorate, with expectations of producing more than 10,000 tons.

Talal Al-Mawas, Director of Agricultural Affairs and Protection at the General Authority for the Management and Development of Al-Ghab, stated that the cultivated area for the current season reached 3,470 hectares, distributed between 2,350 hectares for summer cultivation and 1,120 hectares for intensive cultivation. He noted that preliminary estimates indicate a production of 10,797 tons, with an average yield of 300 to 400 kilograms per dunum.

For his part, farmer Abdullah Al-Mohammad from Al-Jabin village pointed out that current crop prices are low and do not match production costs, calling for support for farmers to provide basic production inputs. Farmer Ahmad Al-Mohammad highlighted the importance of crop leaves as animal feed, explaining that cultivation sites are concentrated in the villages and towns of Jab Ramla, Mahardah, Al-Tarimesa, Al-Saqilbiya, and Salhab.

Al-Mawas pointed out difficulties facing cultivation, the most prominent being the rise in production input costs and the lack of irrigation water due to the destruction suffered by dams and irrigation channels, in addition to weak marketing of the crop. The Ministry of Agriculture stated on the 13th of this month that preliminary estimates for peanut production in Syria reach approximately 17,970 tons, with a cultivated area estimated at about 6,256 hectares.
