Pentagon announces initiative to operate military bases for 90 days without external support
The Pentagon prepares to run its main US bases for 90 days without civilian infrastructure to ensure defense continuity.

The US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, is preparing to operate its main military bases within the United States for at least 90 days without external support, in preparation for the possibility of a large-scale war that could damage energy networks.

Fortress Initiative

The US military initiative, named Fortress, aims to enable the US Army to continue its operations even if civilian infrastructure fails. Under the initiative, each major military facility within US territory is expected to be able to continue its basic operations for at least 90 days, including securing electricity, water, fuel, and communication services.

Crisis Preparedness

The Pentagon also seeks to create the necessary conditions to convert civilian factories to defense production during crises, establish alternative supply chains, and build strategic reserves to ensure the continuous flow of weapons, fuel, and other materials. The initiative also includes developing portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery energy storage systems, and microgrids.

Reactions and Context

Fox News network quoted Pentagon spokesperson Sean Barnell as saying in a press statement: "We do not want to rely on traditional urban civilian infrastructure to carry out our national defense missions; we cannot do that, as it is an unacceptable risk." Barnell described the initiative as "insuring the American homeland," noting that "without electricity, communications, water, logistics, assembly lines, and the fundamental infrastructure of military command will be lost." The Pentagon's announcement comes amid the ongoing war between the United States and Iran, and the continuing repercussions on global energy supplies.
