The Syrian Pharmacists Syndicate, Daraa branch, in cooperation with the governorate’s ministries of Health, Culture, and Education, organized today, Wednesday, an awareness lecture titled “Addiction: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment” at the Arab Cultural Center in Daraa city.
Causes of addiction and importance of concerted efforts
Member of the Syrian Pharmacists Syndicate, Dr. Talal Al-Ajlani, told SANA that the main causes of addiction include the misuse of medications and the influence of the social environment, stressing the importance of concerted efforts by families, society, and relevant institutions to curb the spread of this phenomenon and protect youth from its repercussions.
Al-Ajlani pointed out that addiction negatively impacts an individual’s life, educational journey, behavior, and social relationships, calling for intensified awareness programs in schools and universities to inform youth about its risks and potential effects on their health and future, with a focus on age groups between 18 and 30.
Role of families and institutions in early detection and prevention
For her part, Dr. Sara Al-Muslmani, head of the Psychology Department at the Daraa Health Directorate, highlighted the importance of the family and school roles in observing behavioral and psychological changes among youth, providing necessary support, and enhancing awareness in educational institutions to help detect problems early and refer to specialists for appropriate assessment and treatment.
Al-Muslmani emphasized that prevention requires integrated efforts among families, health and educational institutions, and society, alongside raising awareness about addiction risks and correcting misconceptions associated with it, thereby encouraging seeking specialized help free from social stigma.
The lecture falls within awareness activities aimed at enhancing social responsibility in addiction prevention through cooperation between health, educational, and cultural authorities, and disseminating correct information about its causes, effects, and management.
