Polish President Karol Nawrocki has decided to cut his scheduled visit to Senegal and return to his country, coinciding with the police siege of the Constitutional Court building in Warsaw. The plane carrying the Polish President, which had departed for Senegal, was diverted from Spanish airspace.
According to Polish media, a large number of people gathered outside the Court building on Friday evening, including the leader of the opposition Law and Justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and former President of the Constitutional Court Julia Przyłębska, while the police imposed a security cordon around the building.
Political reactions
Polish President posted on the US platform "X": "At such a time, the President of the Republic should be in Poland. I am cutting my flight to Senegal. I am returning." For his part, Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on "X" that "restoring the rule of law is our duty. It is a difficult process, sometimes painful, and requires taking firm steps. There is no other way."
Police measures and judicial statement
A statement was published on the website of the Polish Constitutional Court regarding the removal of the Court's President, Bogdan Szpunar, and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sotkowski, from their positions. Warsaw police announced that it is carrying out its legal duties inside the Constitutional Court building, following a report submitted by Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, who warned of potential threats to the safety of judges and court staff.
The file of judicial appointments in Poland has been witnessing ongoing political disagreement for a long time, which has practically led to the Constitutional Court's work reaching a state of paralysis.
