Polish President Ends Senegal Visit Amid Constitutional Crisis
Polish President Karol Nawrocki announces his emergency return to Warsaw following constitutional court rulings and protests.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki cut short his visit to Senegal and decided to return to his country, following developments at the Constitutional Court in the capital, Warsaw, which coincided with the deployment of police around the court's premises.

Nawrocki stated on the platform "X" on Saturday: "At such a time, the President should be in Poland. I am cutting short my flight to Senegal; I am returning." For his part, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in a post on "X" that restoring the rule of law is a duty for his government, emphasizing that this process is difficult and sometimes requires taking firm steps.

Emergency Judicial Measures

The Polish President's decision to cut short his visit to Senegal came after the Constitutional Court published on its website a measure ordering the removal of its President, Bogdan Szpytma, and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sotkowski, from exercising their duties for one month. This measure, taken by Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, was based on Article 130 of the Polish Law on the Organization of Common Courts.

Gatherings and Security Intervention

The area around the court witnessed a gathering of protesters, including Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the opposition Law and Justice party, and former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Warsaw police announced that they were carrying out their legal duties after receiving a report from Judge Korwin-Piotrowska regarding potential threats to the safety of judges and court staff.

Roots of the Political Crisis

The roots of the crisis trace back to a political and constitutional dispute ongoing since 2015 regarding the appointment of Constitutional Court judges and their independence. The conflict renewed after the parliament elected new judges, amid disagreements with the President over the procedures for their appointment, which led to the paralysis of the court's work and escalated the confrontation between the presidency and the government regarding the powers of authorities and judicial independence.
