A poll conducted by the US "Associated Press" on Tuesday showed that about two-thirds of voters participating in the midterm congressional elections believe that President Donald Trump's policies harmed the economy, while the economy and the future of democracy top the list of the most important issues for them.
According to the AP Voter Poll, about two-thirds of participants believe that Trump's policies worsened the economic situation in the United States, compared to about 3 in 10 who said they contributed to improving it. Also, about two-thirds of voters believed that Trump's policies regarding tariffs harmed the US economy.
The results showed that about 4 in 10 voters consider the economy the most important issue facing the country, amid widespread concerns about rising fuel and food prices. In contrast, about 3 in 10 voters placed the state of US democracy at the top of their priorities, while about 1 in 10 chose immigration or healthcare issues, with foreign policy and crime ranking lower.
The poll indicated that about half of voters consider government corruption and the rising cost of living decisive factors in choosing their congressional candidates. These two issues clearly outperformed other files, including immigration enforcement policies, the war on Iran, and data centers related to artificial intelligence.
The negative results were not limited to Trump's economic performance, as the poll showed that more than half of voters do not consider him a strong leader, nor do they see him defending the interests of people like them or giving priority to appropriate issues. Also, more than half of participants said that Trump lacks the mental capacity to perform his presidential duties effectively.
About 6 in 10 voters believe that the US president puts his personal interests above those of the country, compared to about 4 in 10 who believe he prioritizes the national interest. These results come amid the midterm congressional elections, in which Republicans and Democrats compete to control the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The elections include all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate, and their results determine the balance of power within Congress during the last two years of Trump's second presidential term.
