The Supreme Committee for the Elections of the People's Assembly announced on Sunday, July 5, the postponement of the date of the first session of the Assembly, according to Resolution No. 40, to be determined later.
The committee only published the decision through its official identifiers on social media, without any explanation or alternative date, which sparked a wave of widespread criticism demanding transparency and no delay in holding the session that has been expected for weeks.
The committee's pages were flooded with comments that carried a clear tone of displeasure, considering that the lack of an official explanation of the reasons for the postponement is unacceptable in the new Syria and opens the door to speculation and gossip, calling for transparency regarding all decisions related to state policies, especially those related to the lives and interests of the general public.
President Al-Shara's participation in the NATO summit
Private sources justified the wave of public dissatisfaction with the postponement of the session of the People's Assembly in light of Syrians' thirst for their new parliament more than a year and a half after the overthrow of the former regime, pointing out that the Syrian public has been waiting for months for the assembly to meet to begin the adoption of dozens of laws that affect public life and various economic and social affairs.
The sources said that the postponement of the session may be related to President Ahmed al-Shara's participation in the NATO summit scheduled to be held in Turkey on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8, which was revealed by the White House through its announcement of an upcoming meeting between presidents al-Sharia and Trump on the sidelines of the summit.
The sources pointed out that although President Sharia did not participate in the first session of the People's Assembly, which will be chaired by the oldest member, and includes the swearing in of members, and then the elections of the speaker of the parliament, his deputy and members of the secret bureau, the legitimate president "will attend the second session of the parliament, which will be held the next day, in order to give an orientation speech to the members of the council before the actual start of their work."
Visit of the French President
The announcement of the postponement of the session also coincided with the announcement of the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Damascus to meet with President Ahmed al-Shara, which is expected on Monday, as the Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the information directorate in the presidency as saying that there is a delegation accompanying the French president and a delegation that includes investors and representatives of French companies, in an indication of the orientation of the two sides to enhance economic cooperation in addition to political files.
It explained that Presidents Ahmed al-Sharaa and French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a "round dialogue" with the two delegations.
According to the directorate, the talks will address regional and international developments and prospects for bilateral cooperation in various fields, as part of the joint keenness to continue political dialogue and strengthen relations between the two countries.
Completion of the composition of the People's Assembly
On Wednesday (July 1st), the composition of the new Syrian People's Assembly was officially completed after the head of the High Elections Committee, Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, announced the names of the "complementary third" appointed by President Ahmed al-Shara.
During a press conference held in the lobby of the People's Assembly in central Damascus, the Chairman of the Committee read out Decree No. (143) of 2026, which includes the names of the members of the People's Assembly who won membership and were previously announced by the Supreme Elections Committee, in addition to the names of the complementary third of the members of the Council.
During the conference, Al-Ahmad called for the People's Assembly to convene on Monday, May 6, 2026, indicating that the duration of the People's Assembly's session based on the Constitutional Declaration is two and a half years (30 months) that can be extended.
The total number of members of the People's Assembly is 210 members, 140 seats are elected, while 70 seats have been appointed by the legitimate president, and so far the council includes 207 members, while 3 seats are still vacant, which is the share of the governorate of Suwayda due to the conditions that the governorate is going through.
