Power outage in Khartoum after drone strikes on a substation
Widespread power cuts hit Khartoum after a drone struck the Al-Markhiyat substation in Omdurman.

Power was cut off in large parts of the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Tuesday, following a drone strike on the Al-Markhiyat electrical substation in Omdurman, west of the capital. Witnesses told Anadolu Agency that the drone attacked the station on Tuesday morning, causing power outages in various areas of the capital.

Witnesses from several neighborhoods in the capital confirmed the power outage in their areas in the morning. Activists also shared video clips on social media showing smoke rising from the Al-Markhiyat power station. As of 06:30 GMT, no official comment had been issued regarding the extent of the damage or the party responsible for targeting the station.

This attack comes a day after Sudan Electricity Company announced that the "Rapid Support Forces" targeted five electrical substations with drones in the states of Sinnar in the southeast, Gedaref in the east, and Al-Jazirah in the center. The state-owned company explained that the attacks caused severe damage to the stations, leading to power outages in the three states, as well as in White Nile state in the center of the country.

Sudanese authorities and human rights organizations accuse the Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilian infrastructure, while the latter usually does not comment on these accusations, stating that it is working to "protect civilians." Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the "Rapid Support Forces" have been engaged in a war following disputes over the organization of the military institution, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people, exacerbating famine and the humanitarian crisis in the country.
