Saher Saghir, director of the Tadmur area in eastern Homs countryside, announced the precautionary closure of the Deir Ezzor-Tadmur road on Friday evening and Saturday morning to safeguard the safety of citizens and drivers, following damage caused by floods, particularly the deterioration of road edges and the weakening of some sections, making it difficult to identify damaged parts at night.
For his part, Saghir clarified that the area administration began its intervention from the first hours of the floods, in coordination with the Civil Defense in Tadmur, Internal Security, and Al-Sukhna detachments and surrounding areas, under the direct supervision of Homs Governor, where a team was formed to monitor emergency cases in the desert and respond to distress calls.
He noted that the intervention included northern roads leading to Al-Kom, Al-Tayyiba, and Qasr al-Hayr, where several stranded shepherds were rescued and secured to safe areas, in addition to assisting vehicles stranded due to the collapse of the Al-Kom bridge located between Al-Kom and Al-Tayyiba, and securing temporary traffic flow on the road.
Saghir highlighted the participation of the Ministry of Defense in rescue operations for those stranded in floods via aviation, and the efforts of Internal Security and Civil Defense elements who worked throughout the night to identify routes and assist vehicles in crossing safely, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Civil Defense centers on vital roads.
Saghir explained that the Deir Ezzor-Tadmur road witnessed several accidents due to floods, with search operations continuing for one missing person, noting that the continued flow of floods led to the erosion of large parts of the road shoulders and sides, and damage to protection lanes, causing soft and weak spots to appear in the asphalt layer.
He stressed the need for urgent intervention to carry out emergency repair and support works for damaged sections until the necessary technical treatment is completed, pointing out that the area administration faced difficulties during rescue and response operations, most notably the shortage of heavy machinery and cranes, forcing it to bring a "Turks" mechanism from Homs over a distance exceeding 270 kilometers.
Saghir called on residents and drivers to comply with the road closure during evening hours, avoid risking passage through damaged sections, and adhere to instructions from competent authorities until the damage is repaired and the road is secured to ensure the safety of its users.
