President Ahmed Al-Shara congratulated President Donald Trump and the American people on Saturday, July 4, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America.
In a post published on his personal account on the X platform, President Al-Sharaa said: "We in the new Syria look forward to building relations based on mutual respect and fruitful cooperation, to consolidate stability and prosperity, in a way that serves the aspirations of our two peoples, and contributes to the security and peace of the region and the world."
Damascus-Washington Relations from Estrangement to Openness
Syrian-American relations are going through a phase that seems to be the closest to a comprehensive restructuring since December 2024, the date of the fall of the former Syrian regime.
President Ahmed al-Shara's visit to Washington in November 2025 — the first by a Syrian president since the country's independence in 1946 — was a crucial turning point, followed by a U.S. decision to lift most sanctions on Syria, including the suspension of the Caesar Act, which has been the biggest obstacle to any economic recovery or international investment.
A few months later, the United States announced on April 16 , 2026, the full withdrawal of its military forces from Syria, ending a nearly 11-year existence, after handing over its last bases in the countryside of al-Hasakah to the Syrian army, in a move that was considered an official end to the phase of direct conflict and the opening of the door to new political arrangements.
Upcoming Developments
Damascus is preparing for a more sensitive step to remove it from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. On June 22 , political circles in Washington unveiled a "historic" understanding that paves the way for Syria's permanent removal from the list, as part of a comprehensive reassessment of the country's new phase.
Observers confirm that US lawmakers are exerting pressure on the administration to speed up administrative procedures, considering that keeping Syria on the list constitutes the biggest obstacle to the flow of international and American investments, hinders reconstruction efforts, and that its delisting will launch a new economic phase commensurate with the ongoing political transformation in the country.
