The Al-Hasakah Directorate of Health, with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross, reopened the prosthetics department at the headquarters of the General Authority of Qamishli National Hospital on Monday. This decision comes after the department ceased operations since the end of 2024, with the aim of providing prosthetic and rehabilitation services to amputees, helping them regain mobility and enhance their independence.
For his part, Al-Hasakah Health Director Khaled Al-Khaled told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the reopening followed the completion of expansion, rehabilitation, and modernization works, which contribute to improving service quality and expanding the scope of beneficiaries. He noted that the department's capacity increased from 20 to 40 beneficiaries per month, with efforts underway to raise it to 60 beneficiaries.
Al-Khaled added that the services include providing necessary mobility aids, offering appropriate training and rehabilitation services, which help beneficiaries regain their mobility and reintegrate into their daily and social lives. He pointed out that the department receives cases of lower limb amputations from various areas in Al-Hasakah and other governorates, and provides prosthetic limbs for above- and below-knee amputations.
The prosthetics department at Qamishli National Hospital was first opened in 2023 before ceasing operations at the end of 2024, which led to a disruption in its services during the suspension period, until coordination was made with the International Committee of the Red Cross to reactivate it and develop its capabilities.
