Protest in Brussels Calls on EU to End Houthi Siege on Taiz
Participants in Brussels urge the EU to pressure for an end to the Houthi siege on Taiz.

Participants in a protest in front of the European Parliament in Brussels called on the European Union to intensify its efforts to pressure for an end to the Houthi militia's siege on the city of Taiz, and to permanently open main roads safely, ensuring freedom of movement for civilians and the delivery of aid and essential goods.

The Yemeni News Agency reported on Saturday that a statement issued by the protest, organized by the Yemeni community in Brussels with the participation of Yemeni academics, human rights activists, and journalists in Belgium and the Netherlands, emphasized the importance of taking measures to protect civilians and ensuring investigations into violations and holding those responsible accountable under international law.

Demands for Supporting the Affected

The protest statement, bearing the slogan "Lift the siege on Taiz.. Stop the Houthi threat," also called on EU institutions to support those affected by the conflict, provide their basic needs, and create suitable conditions for the safe and voluntary return of displaced persons.

Fears of Security Consequences

Participants stressed the necessity of confronting threats to the security of Yemen, the region, and international navigation amid the Houthi militia's increasing attacks, and enhancing efforts to protect human rights, support Yemeni state institutions, and uphold the rule of law.

The statement pointed out the continued suffering of civilians due to violence and displacement, warning of the repercussions of attacks on several Yemeni areas, as well as the impact of threats in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait on the security of international navigation and trade.

UN Warnings

Participants emphasized that these developments call for more effective international action to alleviate civilian suffering and support stability in Yemen. Last week, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned of the growing humanitarian consequences in Yemen's Taiz governorate, confirming that restrictions imposed by the Houthi militia on access to the city have disrupted basic services, particularly maternal care services.
