Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with US President’s special envoy Steve Whitkoff at the Konstantin Palace in Saint Petersburg on the political settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war, the Iran file, and prospects for resuming economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington.
Russia Today reported that Putin expressed his appreciation for the attention US President Donald Trump pays to reaching a settlement in Ukraine, noting that Trump emphasized during their last call the “urgent necessity to end the conflict to stop human losses,” a stance welcomed by Moscow, which expressed its support for efforts in this regard.
Results of Consultations in Oslo
Putin was briefed by Whitkoff on the results of consultations he held yesterday, Tuesday, in Oslo with European and Ukrainian officials, where the US envoy described those talks as fruitful, pointing to tangible progress, a ground for reaching a solution, and the possibility of achieving a ceasefire. Whitkoff clarified that he brought documents containing perceptions and approaches regarding the political settlement of the war to present to the Russian President.
The Iran File and the Economy
On the level of other international files, the meeting addressed regional situations, where Putin expressed Moscow’s interest in Washington’s assessments of the current situation in Iran, while simultaneously affirming “Russia’s readiness to help solve the Iranian crisis,” noting in this context that Russia’s positions on this matter are well known. On the economic front, Putin expressed Russia’s interest in resuming economic cooperation with the United States, while Whitkoff pointed to wide prospects for developing economic relations between the two countries, highlighting the opportunities that will be available to Ukraine in the post-conflict phase.
Whitkoff referred in this context to Russian-American agreements concerning diesel fuel, citing them as an example of what can be achieved through joint cooperation. US President had signed an executive order on the 16th of the current month suspending the implementation of sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs targeting Russian oil revenues, after having signed a law last month granting him the authority to impose these measures on Russian oil and gas buyers.
