Putin proposes meeting with Xi and Trump to discuss Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a meeting in China with Xi Jinping and Donald Trump to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

Russian proposal for a trilateral meeting

The American newspaper "Wall Street Journal" reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed holding a meeting in China with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and American counterpart Donald Trump to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. Putin raised this proposal during a phone call with Trump on October 9, according to the newspaper's Monday edition.

Positions of the concerned parties

For his part, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed to the newspaper that talks regarding a potential meeting are ongoing, but clarified that no decision has been made on the matter yet. Sources familiar with the talks indicated that the Kremlin proposed holding the meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled to take place in China on November 18 and 19.

American openness and Chinese stance

According to the newspaper, a senior American official stated that Trump has not yet agreed to participate in the meeting, but may be open to the idea given his pledge to end the war. Other sources reported that Russian officials conveyed the proposal to Beijing through diplomatic channels, and that the Chinese side indicated it would not oppose holding the meeting if Trump agrees.

Refusal to comment and historical background

The newspaper noted that the White House declined to comment on the matter, while the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment. It is worth noting that Russia has been waging a military offensive against Ukraine since February 24, 2022, and has made ending the war contingent on Kyiv abandoning its pursuit of joining Western military blocs, which Kyiv considers "interference" in its affairs.
