Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Qabawat held talks yesterday, Friday, with a US State Department delegation led by Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Riley Barnes, exploring cooperation prospects on the missing persons file and enhancing social cohesion and diversity. The parties also discussed via video conference the development of legislation related to labor, associations, and combating hate speech.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor indicated that the meeting reviewed ways to draft a law combating hate speech and countering misinformation on social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of continued communication and exchange of relevant documents between the two sides. Saad Baroud, Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, participated in the meeting.
For her part, Qabawat presented during the meeting a file on reuniting children with their families, preparing a new law for associations, and amending the Labor Law through social dialogue involving stakeholders. The Minister explained that these amendments aim to enhance employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, protect children from work, as well as develop vocational training programs, labor inspection, and occupational safety.
These meetings come within the framework of exploring cooperation areas in social and humanitarian issues, developing related legislation to protect the most vulnerable groups, and enhancing employment and social integration opportunities. Days earlier, Qabawat had discussed with a delegation from the Syrian American Council ways to enhance cooperation and leverage the expertise of the Syrian community in the United States and organize channels for delivering aid to Syria.
