Qatar Emir and Putin Discuss Energy Security and Middle East Developments
Qatar's Emir and Russian President Putin discussed bilateral cooperation, energy security, and Middle East developments in Moscow.

Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of energy security and gas market stability, alongside developments in the Middle East and updates on the Strait of Hormuz. This came during a meeting between them at the Kremlin in the Russian capital Moscow, on the sidelines of the eighth summit of heads of state and government of countries belonging to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, according to the official Qatari news agency "QNA" on Tuesday evening.

Enhancing Economic Relations

The agency stated that both sides discussed a number of regional and international issues, particularly developments in the Middle East and ways to enhance security and stability in the region and the world. They also reviewed the friendship and cooperation relations between Qatar and Russia and ways to enhance them in various fields, in order to achieve the common interests of the two countries. The meeting addressed the main topics on the summit's agenda, foremost among them energy supply chains and updates on the Strait of Hormuz.

Affirming the Strength of Partnership

Qatar's Emir affirmed the solidity of the historical relations between Doha and Moscow, and their development in economic, investment, and other fields. He expressed his satisfaction with the development of Qatari investments in Russia. Putin stated that the stability of the gas market depends on good coordination between Russia and Qatar, and that this coordination contributes to market stability. He praised Qatari investments in major Russian companies and the development witnessed by cultural relations between the two countries.

Turbulent Regional Context

These energy security discussions come amid disruptions witnessed by global markets, in the wake of US-Iranian escalation in the region, which revealed weaknesses in oil and gas supply chains. These disruptions are linked to the heavy reliance of global markets on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which is a strategic passage for energy and commodity supplies. On February 28, the United States and Israel began an aggression against Iran, and Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and what it said were US military facilities in Arab countries.
