Quneitra Governor Discusses UNFICYP's Role in Halting Violations with UN Official
Quneitra governor meets UN under-secretary-general to discuss field developments and the UN's role in protecting local populations.

Quneitra Governor Ghassan al-Sayyid Ahmad met on Saturday with Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix to discuss recent developments in the governorate, particularly the continuation of Israeli violations and the role UNFICYP can play in this regard.

Impact of Violations and Coordination Mechanisms

The meeting focused on the impact of these violations on the daily lives of local residents in villages adjacent to the Disengagement Line, as well as strengthening frameworks for coordination and joint cooperation. The discussions also addressed the legal mechanisms provided by the UN Charter in settling disputes through peaceful means and maintaining international peace and security.

UNFICYP's Role and Humanitarian Files

The governor emphasized the necessity of UNFICYP fulfilling its full responsibilities under international resolutions, particularly monitoring and accurately documenting Israeli violations, thereby contributing to the protection of residents and mitigating the humanitarian and economic repercussions of these attacks. In a statement to SANA correspondent, Rawad Ghanem, Director of the International Cooperation Directorate in the governorate, noted that the meeting covered the file of detainees and arbitrary arrests affecting the region's residents.

Residents' Testimonies and Agricultural Damage

In this context, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations met with district directors, mayors, and village heads in the governorate. Several relatives of detainees provided statements and testimonies regarding the abduction of their sons and the suffering they endure. Emphasis was placed on the severe damage inflicted on the agricultural sector and the significant difficulties faced by farmers and livestock breeders, including resource shortages and threats to livelihoods.

It is noted that UNFICYP was established on May 31, 1974, and has continued its work in the area to oversee the implementation of the Disengagement Agreement. Additionally, Saad Baroud, Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, discussed on the 4th of the current month with Major General Anita Asmah, Head of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Mission and Commander, ways to enhance coordination between the Syrian government and the mission.
