Rainwater accumulated in several streets in the city of Al-Bab in eastern rural Aleppo hindered traffic, after heavy rainfall led to the flooding of parts of roads and sidewalks, amid repeated complaints from shop owners about the impact of this situation on their businesses.
The city’s wastewater manager, Muhammad Bakrawi, clarified that monitoring by municipal workshops revealed that several farmers had blocked the main sewage channel to irrigate their lands, despite being warned more than once during the summer. He pointed out that most of the streets where water accumulations were observed drain into this channel.
For his part, Bakrawi noted that the municipality had confiscated several vehicles and suction engines used in these violations and referred those responsible to the judiciary, affirming the continued monitoring and immediate treatment of blockages.
For his part, a shop owner in the city, Muhammad Talib, pointed out that the problem has been recurring for about ten years, noting that rainwater enters commercial premises during heavy downpours. He added that the low street level and blocked drainage outlets exacerbate water accumulation, despite works carried out to address this issue.
Another shop owner, Ahmad Amin Al-Rahib, added that water accumulation recurs with every rainfall, calling on relevant authorities to find a solution that limits street flooding and prevents permanent damage to commercial premises.
For his part, Musa Al-Mahmoud, a shop owner, indicated that residents have been suffering from this problem for six or seven years, and that water had caused damage to goods and hindered car passage in previous seasons, expressing hope for a fundamental solution to the problem.
The city of Al-Bab witnessed the formation of flash floods and large accumulations of heavy rainwater, which led to the closure of several vital roads, hindered traffic, and damaged some properties and commercial premises in the area.
