Raqqa Health Directorate Organizes Workshop to Enhance Midwives' Mental Health Skills
Raqqa Health Directorate, in collaboration with SAMS, held a workshop for 40 midwives to enhance maternal mental health support.

The Raqqa Health Directorate, in cooperation with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), organized an interactive workshop titled "Healthy Thinking" today, Monday, lasting three days, targeting 40 midwives in health centers. The aim is to enhance their skills in maternal mental health, enabling them to detect early signs of depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy, and refer cases requiring specialized care.

The workshop, held in the Palace Hall in the governorate, covered several key topics, including the concept of healthy thinking, identifying negative thoughts and ways to handle and modify them, acquiring problem-solving skills and effective stress management, as well as recognizing symptoms of depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy. It also focused on enhancing midwives' skills in providing psychological support to mothers and equipping them with tools to deal with psychological stress.

Instructor Fatima Al-Awad told SANA that the workshop is part of the activities of the Mental Health Department within the Health Directorate, aimed at strengthening maternal care services and supporting mental health, thereby reflecting on the quality of healthcare services provided to women. Al-Awad emphasized the importance of training in enhancing early detection of depression cases, linking women to mental health services when needed, reducing pressure on specialized departments, and ensuring clear referral pathways and continuous follow-up.

For her part, midwife Fatima Ahmed, one of the participants, stressed the importance of the training and its topics in enhancing trainees' skills and developing their professional capabilities, helping them perform their duties efficiently and accurately, especially in strengthening the healthy relationship between mother and child. Fellow participant Fawziya Said highlighted the importance of the scientific steps addressed in the workshop in solving problems related to pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood, enabling women to cope with life crises, and helping pregnant and breastfeeding women maintain their mental health.

The workshop falls within the efforts of the Raqqa Health Directorate to spread health and mental health awareness by implementing training and educational programs targeting health cadres and the community, to enhance women's mental health and improve the quality of care services provided to them. Earlier, on the 14th of this month, it organized an educational and awareness lecture on the importance of early detection of breast cancer, in cooperation with the "For Humanity" organization. It is worth noting that the "SAMS" association is a non-profit humanitarian medical organization founded in 1998 by Syrian-American doctors, working to provide healthcare and medical education in Syria and neighboring countries, aiming to support affected communities and provide medical and humanitarian services to those in need.
