Researchers develop AI-based system for transmitting scents online
Centronic system combines AI and gas sensors to transmit scents digitally with 73% accuracy.

Researchers from Ohio State University in the United States and Zhejiang Laboratory in China have developed an AI-powered system that detects scents and transmits their data online, then reconstructs them elsewhere. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Science Advances, according to a report published on Thursday by Tech Explorare, a website specializing in science and technology news.

The system, known as "Centronic," uses six gas sensors to detect chemical compounds associated with smell. AI then analyzes the data and sends it to a receiver that reconstructs a similar scent using aromatic liquids and micro-diffusers. The prototype supported five prominent scents, including coffee, cake, and orange. Participants in tests involving 14 volunteers were able to identify the reconstructed scents with an accuracy of approximately 73 percent.

For their part, researchers clarified that the system does not transmit the scent molecules themselves over the internet; rather, it sends data that helps the receiver reproduce a similar scent using available components. The team also developed a prototype cup that combines scent with flavored liquids, aiming to provide a digital experience that integrates smell and taste within mixed reality applications.

It was noted that this technology could eventually allow users to experience product scents before purchasing them online, or add the sense of smell to virtual reality environments. The technology is still in its experimental stages and requires further development to improve the accuracy and scope of scent reconstruction, but it represents a step toward making digital experiences more interactive.
