Residents of the city of Hajin in eastern Deir ez-Zor countryside have been suffering for about seven years from the repercussions of the absence of most infrastructure services, primarily sewage networks, which negatively impacts citizens' daily lives and increases potential environmental and health risks amid ongoing demands to improve basic services and implement projects ensuring a healthy and safe environment.
The head of Hajin Municipal Council, Salam Mahmoud Al-Sheikh, told SANA on Thursday that the sewage network is old and suffers from blockages, breaks in channels, and the discharge of sewage waste into streets, noting that urban expansion has increased the need to lay new lines. Al-Sheikh pointed out that the municipal council uses temporary solutions, namely compressors to extract stagnant water so it does not spill into streets causing environmental pollution, stressing the necessity of replacing these networks and finding radical solutions.
For his part, Obaid Al-Shajif, a resident of Al-Raya district, in a similar statement highlighted the absence of a sewage network in the area, calling on the municipal council to maintain infrastructure services. Jarrallah Ahmad Al-Zayd, a resident of Al-Shalash district, explained that the district suffers from a poor sewage situation, noting that stagnant water could affect well water, and called for alternative solutions and completing the sewage network project reaching the beginning of the district.
Citizen Hajj Aboud Al-Zayd from Al-Raya district noted that technical pits require continuous emptying, which exacerbates burdens on residents and increases environmental risks, with the spread of insects and fears of diseases related to water and surrounding environment pollution. Citizen Abdul Razzaq Mohammad Al-Husseini pointed out that the absence of a sewage network in this agricultural-nature area leads to land pollution, calling for the implementation of integrated sewage projects that mitigate environmental damage and protect agricultural lands and water sources.
The reality of sewage in Hajin reflects a deterioration in service infrastructure, relying on temporary solutions to contain the problem, while residents continue to demand the implementation of integrated networks and treatment plants ensuring safe disposal of wastewater and improving health and environmental conditions in the city.
