Residents of the town of Hazimeh in northern Raqqa have called for the establishment of a school or classrooms on the western side of the international road to reduce the risks students face daily while crossing the highway connecting the city of Raqqa to Tal Abyad, leading to the border crossing with Turkey, especially with increased traffic and trucks during the current academic year.
Ahmed Al-Hamoud, principal of Al-Muthanna School in Hazimeh, told SANA on Thursday that the school has approximately 500 students, about half of whom are forced to cross the main road daily to go to and return from school. He noted that morning arrival and dismissal periods witness heavy traffic congestion, posing a danger to children's lives.
Al-Hamoud urged official authorities, the Ministry of Education, and the Hazimeh town council to expedite a permanent solution to the problem, given the absence of a school on the western side of the road. He explained that the school administration, in coordination with security forces, traffic police, internal security, and teaching staff, takes daily measures to ensure student crossing, including halting traffic for 15 to 30 minutes.
For his part, Mustafa Youssef, head of the Educational Buildings Department at the Raqqa Directorate of Education and Teaching, stated in a similar statement that the directorate approved the construction of a school building or the installation of prefabricated classrooms west of the road to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of students and their families. Youssef pointed to coordination with the Raqqa Governorate Traffic Administration to enhance preventive measures and implement procedures aimed at protecting students during their daily commute to school, until the problem is permanently resolved.
The town of Hazimeh is located in the northern countryside of Raqqa Governorate, approximately 21 kilometers from the city of Raqqa, with the international road connecting the city to the Tal Abyad border crossing with Turkey passing through it.
