Several German cities witnessed riots, violence, and property damage following demonstrations yesterday evening in which tens of thousands of Germans participated, organized by the "Generation Z Regelt" movement, calling on the government to improve education, social services, and other areas.
The German magazine Der Spiegel reported that the most severe violence occurred in the cities of Frankfurt and Cologne, where individuals broke into stores, stole sports shoes and other items, smashed shop fronts, and threw Molotov cocktails at police officers. An arms store in Frankfurt was also attacked.
According to the magazine, police detained more than 30 people temporarily in Frankfurt, cordoned off the Zeil shopping street, and deployed special security units in the city center. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Böseck described the violence as shocking and vowed to take strict measures against those involved.
In Cologne, police officers were attacked at the Cathedral Square near the main train station, where bottles and bicycles were thrown at them, resulting in one injury. Police arrested five individuals.
Cologne Police Chief Johannes Hermanns stated that Molotov cocktails and emergency hammers were confiscated from masked individuals. He said security measures prevented a recurrence of the violent scenes witnessed in other European cities.
The disturbances spread to other German cities, including the capital Berlin, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. In Berlin, police ended a protest involving approximately 700 participants after thousands demonstrated peacefully at the Brandenburg Gate. Police reported that 27 officers suffered minor injuries and detained up to 56 participants.
In Hamburg, chaos erupted around the main train station, where masked individuals set off fireworks, tore up construction barriers, and set them on fire. In Stuttgart, violations of assembly rules were recorded, including face-covering bans, deviating from the designated route, and setting off fireworks. Police reported five officers with minor injuries and recorded approximately 50 violations.
More than 160,000 people participated in demonstrations across Germany, organized by the "Generation Z Regelt" movement, demanding improved education, housing provision, enhanced climate protection, and protesting cuts to social service spending and the arms race.
