Ronaldo surpasses Messi in vote for best Ballon d'Or edition
The 2008 Ballon d'Or edition topped the France Football and UEFA vote as the best historical season for the award.

The edition in which Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or in 2008 was crowned the best historical season for the award, surpassing the edition won by Argentine Lionel Messi in 2012, following the public vote launched by France Football magazine in cooperation with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Winners' ranking

The 2008 edition, which saw Ronaldo win the award for the first time while playing for Manchester United, took first place, while Messi's 2012 edition came in second, and Ronaldo's 2017 triumph took third place, with the two players occupying the top three spots in the vote.

Initiative details

The initiative, titled "Ballon d'Or Across Time" (BOAT), aimed to select the best season for a player who won the prestigious individual award, among football legends who won it at least twice, with the selection made through public voting rather than a specialized jury.

Voting conditions

The vote, which ran from October 1 to October 27, imposed a fee of one euro per vote, while the organizers clarified that the initiative aims to celebrate the most prominent individual seasons and does not represent a new official award to determine the best player in football history.
