UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin stressed on Tuesday the importance of enhancing security and stability in the Middle East region. This came during a phone call received by the UAE President from his Russian counterpart, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Review of Regional Issues
The agency stated that the two presidents reviewed a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest, foremost among them developments in the Middle East and the efforts made regarding them. Both sides emphasized "the importance of working to consolidate the foundations of regional security and stability for the benefit of all the peoples and states of the region."
Enhancing Strategic Partnership
The two presidents also discussed various aspects of cooperation and joint work to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries, in a way that serves their common interests. These efforts come amid escalating tensions in the region, most notably the attacks launched by the Houthi group on Saudi airports since October 5.
Regional Context
The Houthi attacks resulted in the death of 20 people and injured hundreds, in addition to material damage and disruptions in air traffic. The escalation comes amid a continuous military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since July last year, which included attacks on civil aviation facilities and energy installations within the Kingdom.
