Russian company Bryansk Self-Propelled Combine Harvester Plant and Belarusian company Gomel Combine Plant have developed a specialized harvester to collect crop seeds from experimental fields, ensuring sample separation and minimizing mixing. This technology aims to help researchers improve the accuracy of agricultural experiments and develop more productive varieties capable of resisting drought and diseases.
Machine display in Moscow
Sputnik news agency reported on Saturday that the new harvester, named "KZS-150", was displayed during the "Golden Autumn" agricultural exhibition in Moscow on October 7. It noted that it is the first machine of its kind manufactured locally in Russia.
Design tailored for narrow fields
The harvester features a design that allows it to operate in narrow experimental agricultural plots, approximately 1.5 meters wide, unlike traditional harvesters designed for large fields. It also enables the collection of grains and oilseeds from each plot separately, reducing the likelihood of sample mixing and maintaining the accuracy of test results.
Support for genetic breeding programs
This technology gains importance from its role in crop genetic breeding and improvement programs, which rely on planting hundreds or thousands of experimental plots with different varieties. Mixing seeds during harvesting can affect result accuracy and make it difficult to identify the best varieties for planting.
Developing specialized equipment for harvesting experimental crops supports seed improvement research, as maintaining sample purity and data accuracy helps evaluate new varieties and select those suitable for climatic conditions and agricultural production requirements.
