Russian researchers have developed a new medical technology that relies on electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve via a small electronic clip placed in the ear canal, aiming to reduce appetite and lower calorie consumption. This innovation comes within the framework of research aimed at finding non-surgical means to help combat obesity.
Technical Details
The Russian news website "Novaya Gazeta" reported on Tuesday that researcher Mikhail Novikov and his team at the National Medical Research Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine in Moscow invented the technology, which involves placing an electrode inside the ear canal for ten minutes before eating. This procedure aims to stimulate the vagus nerve, which is associated with regulating several vital functions, including digestion and appetite.
Clinical Trial Results
The researchers noted that clinical trials involving 88 patients showed a decrease in daily calorie consumption and an improvement in dietary habits among participants who used the technology. This improvement was observed compared to the group that received a placebo, indicating its potential as an aid in limiting weight gain.
Need for More Studies
These results require further studies to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the technology, determine the extent of its safety, and identify the outcomes it can achieve among different patient groups. This technology comes within the research efforts to develop new methods for dealing with obesity and reducing associated health risks, particularly cardiovascular diseases.
