Russian scientists from the Siberian Federal University have developed a new glassy material that converts ultraviolet rays into red-orange light beneficial for plant growth, an innovation that opens the door to manufacturing more efficient and less expensive lamps for use in greenhouses and modern farms.

The Siberian Federal University stated, in a statement relayed by the Russian Sputnik news agency on Monday, that the new material helps provide more uniform lighting for plants, and can be manufactured in a simpler way than currently used materials, which may contribute to lowering the costs of producing agricultural lamps.

Researcher Lyubov Denisova, one of the participants in the development of the material, explained that the new glass is characterized by its ability to convert most of the light it absorbs into red light that helps plants grow, and it possesses the ability to withstand high humidity and temperatures, conditions common inside greenhouses.

The university pointed out that the uses of the new material may extend in the future to other fields, such as the manufacturing of laser devices and some medical applications, in addition to agricultural lighting, while researchers continue to develop samples in preparation for their use in lamp manufacturing.

Researchers hope that this innovation will contribute to the development of more economical and efficient agricultural lighting methods, thereby supporting modern agriculture and helping to improve plant growth conditions in enclosed environments.

This step falls within the framework of scientific efforts aimed at developing modern technologies that support sustainable agriculture and provide more efficient and less costly solutions, contributing to improving agricultural production and addressing challenges related to food supply.
