South Korean company Samsung is preparing to launch new software updates for its wireless Galaxy Buds, featuring advanced health capabilities that allow users to test their hearing abilities and customize ambient sound levels according to their individual needs.
The tech website Digital Trends reported on Thursday that South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety officially approved the hearing test and hearing assistance features, classifying them as medical device software. These features will gradually become available on Galaxy Buds 4 Pro and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro in South Korea starting in early 2027.
In this regard, the hearing test feature relies on emitting tones at different frequencies to measure the lowest sound level a user can hear in each ear, using the pure-tone audiometry technique adopted in clinical examinations. The process takes about five minutes, after which results appear on a chart showing hearing levels across different frequencies.
For its part, the second feature allows users to utilize test results to adjust ambient sound levels and enhance the hearing of sounds that the user finds difficult to catch, rather than increasing the overall volume. This relies on a technical standard used in adjusting hearing aids.
The company indicated that this feature targets adults over 18 years old who suffer from mild to moderate hearing loss. The Samsung Health app also provides information on hearing health, including test results and noise exposure levels.
It added that Samsung received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration last August for the hearing assistance feature and announced its intention to launch it in the United States and selected markets during the last quarter of this year, while setting early 2027 as the date to begin rolling out the features in South Korea.
