SANA director general discusses 'Fill the Space' project updates and prospects for enhancing media cooperation and journalistic capacity building.

The Director General of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Ziad Al-Muhammed, and the Director of International Cooperation at the agency, Mahmoud Al-Haji Othman, met with a delegation from the European Union and Deutsche Welle (DW) during the delegation's visit to the agency's headquarters in Damascus. They discussed the latest developments of the "Fill the Space" project and the prospects for enhancing cooperation in media development and building journalistic capacities.

Both sides reviewed the stages of completing the project, which is implemented by Deutsche Welle in partnership with SANA and supported by the European Union, as well as the results of the training sessions conducted under it, and impressions regarding its impact on developing journalistic skills. The meeting also addressed the agency's evolution since the liberation of Syria, the updates it has undergone, its vision and future goals, alongside discussing existing challenges and the needs of the upcoming stage.

Formation of the European Delegation

The delegation included Francesca Gilli, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa in the European Union's Directorate-General for External Action's Policy Planning and Early Warning Unit (FPI), and Marianne Rubira from the same management team, along with Frederic Krampitz and Levent Baydil from the "Fill the Space" project team at Deutsche Welle.

Field Tour and Journalistic Dialogue

The visit included a tour of the agency's departments, during which the delegation observed operations in the newsroom and new updates, as well as the state of the archives. They also held direct dialogues with several SANA journalists regarding their professional experiences and the challenges facing journalistic work. During the meeting, the role of the European Union in supporting media and press freedom was praised, and opportunities for future cooperation with the EU and Deutsche Welle were discussed.
