The Women's Health Unit at Saqilbiyah National Hospital in the countryside of Hama held, on Monday, an awareness seminar on early breast cancer detection, with the participation of medical and nursing staff at the hospital.
Hiam Faraj, the reproductive health officer at the hospital, presented a talk addressing the importance of diagnosis and early detection of the disease, which constitutes a health challenge, requiring intensified medical and awareness efforts to mitigate its effects and improve chances of treatment and recovery.
Risk Factors and Diagnosis
The seminar focused on defining risk factors and early signs of the disease, and the importance of medical evaluation, mammography, and biopsy to reach an accurate diagnosis. It also discussed treatment options that vary depending on the stage of the disease.
Faraj clarified in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the seminar emphasized that the role of midwives and healthcare workers extends beyond awareness, including also listening to women's concerns, referring suspected cases for medical evaluation and follow-up, to ensure no delay in diagnosis and treatment.
Global Guidelines
She added that the World Health Organization's guidelines in this field were reviewed, within the global initiative to combat breast cancer launched in 2021, which revolves around enhancing awareness and early detection, accelerating diagnosis, and providing comprehensive and integrated treatment, with the goal of reducing mortality from the disease by 2.5 percent annually, thereby helping to save the lives of 2.5 million women by 2040.
The seminar aims to enhance health awareness among women, highlight the importance of self-examination and periodic screening, and provide information on breast cancer symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment.
The world observes October of each year as the global month for breast cancer awareness, known as "Pink Month," to emphasize the importance of early detection and its role in improving treatment chances.
