Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned on Wednesday the opening of Colombia's embassy in the Israeli occupation in occupied Jerusalem, describing the step as a blatant violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized in a statement on the X platform that the step contradicts the firm international position regarding the legal and historical status of Jerusalem, renewing its call for the international community, including the Security Council, to assume its legal and ethical responsibilities. The Kingdom called for urgent action to stop illegal Israeli policies aimed at imposing a new reality by force and undermining the chances of achieving a just and permanent peace.
For his part, the official spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fuad al-Majali, affirmed his country's rejection of this step, stressing that any measures aimed at changing the status or legal center of Jerusalem are null, illegal, and devoid of legal effect. Al-Majali renewed his affirmation that the only way to achieve just and comprehensive peace is to realize an independent Palestinian state with sovereignty on the lines of June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital.
The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, in a statement published on the organization's website, called on all countries to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the holy city, affirming the invalidity of all Israeli legislative and administrative measures aimed at changing the character of Jerusalem. The Secretary-General sent a written letter to the Colombian Foreign Minister urging him to reverse the illegal decision, warning of the long-term consequences that may result from this decision for Colombia's relations with Islamic countries.
Colombia had opened its embassy in occupied Jerusalem earlier today, becoming the tenth country to take this step, after the new Colombian President, Abilardo de la Esperia, reversed the break with Israel adopted by his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, in May 2024 due to its violations in Gaza.
