The Saudi Civil Defense announced on Tuesday that the threat had passed over the capital, Riyadh, minutes after an early warning was issued to alert of an unspecified danger. This came in a post by the Civil Defense on its account on the American platform "X", following the launch of an alert via the National Early Warning Platform for Emergency Situations in the city of Riyadh. The Civil Defense stated that the threat had passed over the city minutes after the alert was issued, without clarifying the nature of the threat that prompted it.
Successive alerts in several regions
This is the first early warning announced to be launched in Riyadh on Tuesday, following a day in which the kingdom saw similar alerts covering four regions. On Monday, Saudi authorities launched early warnings to alert of dangers in Riyadh, Al-Kharj, Najran, and Jazan, without revealing their nature or causes. The warnings began on Monday morning in Jazan and Najran, before later covering the capital Riyadh and Al-Kharj province.
Warnings against gathering and filming
In subsequent alerts, the Civil Defense announced that the threat had passed over the four regions, calling on residents to follow safety instructions and avoid gathering and filming. These alerts come amid ongoing military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni Houthi group since July last year, coinciding with escalating battles between the group and government forces in Yemen.
Background of the conflict with the Houthis
Houthi attacks during October this year focused on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, as well as airports in Abha, Jazan, Najran, and Dammam, along with oil facilities and military sites, according to Saudi data and Houthi announcements. Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition to support the Yemeni government in confronting the Houthi group, which has controlled the capital Sanaa and several provinces since September 2014.
