Saudi official: Kingdom adopts gradual approach in developing its nuclear program
Mamdouh bin Thaniyan confirms nuclear energy is a long-term strategic option for Saudi Arabia based on international standards.

Mamdouh bin Saud bin Thaniyan, CEO of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE), confirmed that nuclear energy represents a long-term strategic option and a fundamental element in the future energy system of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Nuclear Energy Strategy

Bin Thaniyan, while chairing the Saudi delegation participating in the Sixth International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power, which started yesterday in Incheon, South Korea, explained that the Kingdom adopts a gradual and balanced approach in developing its nuclear program, based on international standards and practices.

For his part, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Bin Thaniyan as saying that nuclear energy contributes to diversifying energy sources and enhancing their security, supporting sustainable economic development, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

National Program Objectives

He pointed out that the Saudi nuclear program represents an integrated national project that is not limited to electricity production, but includes building a new economic and technical sector, developing national capabilities, developing high-tech industries, enhancing local content, and raising the competitiveness of the Saudi economy.

He added that the Kingdom is committed to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, enhancing nuclear safety and security, developing national competencies, and strengthening cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

International Cooperation

Bin Thaniyan stressed the importance of enhancing international cooperation and exchanging expertise in developing peaceful nuclear programs, investing in advanced nuclear technologies, developing supply chains, developing human resources, and enhancing community trust in nuclear energy through transparency and effective communication.

It is worth noting that the conference, organized by the IAEA in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will conclude its work on the 29th of this month, with the participation of ministers, senior officials, experts, and specialists in the nuclear energy sector from various countries around the world.
