Saudi Arabia's candidate, Shura Council member Saad bin Salib Al-Otaibi, was elected by acclamation as president of the Arab Parliament on Saturday during the procedural session held at the Arab League General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo to elect the parliament's president and its bureau, thereby succeeding the UAE's Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi.
Al-Otaibi emphasized in a speech after his election that the upcoming phase requires a renewed vision and more effective institutional work, translating Arab parliamentary ambitions into achievements through clear programs and initiatives that enhance performance, raise efficiency, and support partnerships, thereby consolidating the parliament's presence at regional and international forums.
For his part, Al-Otaibi stressed that joint Arab action has become a necessary approach to strengthen the security of Arab states, safeguard their interests, and unify their positions, pointing to the importance of solidarity and integration of efforts in facing the challenges the region is witnessing, and enhancing the capacity of Arab institutions to deal with them more effectively.
He added that he would continue to emphasize that the Palestinian issue would remain at the forefront of the Arab Parliament's priorities, noting the continuation of defending the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, and working to enhance parliamentary presence supporting the Palestinian cause at regional and international forums.
The Arab Parliament had elected the UAE's Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi as its president in October 2024, succeeding the Bahraini Adel Al-Assoumi, as part of renewing the parliament's structures and its bureau. The parliament's president and deputies are elected for a two-year term renewable once, in accordance with the rules governing the work of the Arab parliamentary institution.
