Studied bacterial transformations
A recent scientific study has revealed changes that have occurred in strains of bacteria producing botulinum toxin, used in medical and cosmetic preparations, as a result of their cultivation in laboratories over decades, enabling their use in producing the active ingredient for Botox injections. According to the scientific website "Phys.org," the study published in the journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" examined how these strains have changed over time due to their adaptation to laboratory conditions and production processes, compared to strains living in their natural environment.
Wide genetic differences
Researchers explained that bacteria in their natural form produce a highly dangerous neurotoxin known as botulinum toxin, which can lead to muscle paralysis and breathing difficulties. This toxin, after being processed and its doses adjusted according to medical standards, is used in various therapeutic and cosmetic applications. Analyses covering more than a thousand bacterial strains showed genetic differences and changes between laboratory strains and wild strains, reflecting the impact of continuous cultivation and the conditions in which the bacteria are preserved and used in production processes.
Medical and cosmetic applications
The study's results help understand how microorganisms adapt to human-made environments and the changes that may occur during long-term industrial use, thereby supporting the development of production methods for medical preparations and monitoring the characteristics of the strains used in them. Botox is used in the cosmetic field to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and it also enters medical treatments for conditions including muscle spasms and certain neurological disorders, according to approved indications and dosages.
Monitoring developments
The study highlighted the importance of these findings in enhancing supervision of pharmaceutical industrial processes, as they provide accurate data on bacterial behavior under different laboratory conditions. This information comes in the context of ongoing efforts to develop safer and more effective production technologies, while maintaining international standards for quality and safety.
