Sea dragon causes significant losses to farmers in Tartus countryside
Greenhouses destroyed in Samka and Al-Hawra, with farmers demanding compensation for weather-related damages.

A sea dragon that struck the villages of Samka and Al-Hawra in the Tartus countryside caused significant damage to several greenhouses. The losses affected crops, iron structures, and nylon covers, inflicting substantial financial losses on farmers amid calls for compensation and necessary assistance to overcome the damages and resume their agricultural activities.

Engineer Raneem Qambar, head of the extension unit in Deir Habash in the Suwayda countryside, stated in an interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on Saturday that the unit headed to the affected sites immediately after the sea dragon occurred to conduct an initial inspection, assess the damages, and prepare a report to be submitted to the Tartus Department of Agriculture, which forwards it to the Disaster Mitigation Fund to study farmers' requests and determine eligible recipients for compensation according to approved conditions and ratios.

For his part, farmer Faisal Al-Hasan from Al-Hawra village stated that the damages included four domes planted with cucumbers and other greenhouses belonging to him and several of his neighbors, after winds uprooted nylon covers and poles, destroying crops and iron structures. He noted that the area had never witnessed such extensive damage before, and called for compensation for farmers for part of their losses.

Farmer Khalil Najma from Al-Hawra pointed out that the damage to greenhouses was almost complete, affecting crops, iron structures, and nylon covers. He emphasized that he is now forced to start from scratch and rebuild his source of livelihood, given his family responsibilities and his need for support to resume his agricultural activity.

Greenhouses are among the important sources of agricultural production in the Tartus countryside, as many farmers rely on them to secure their crops and income. The phenomenon of the sea dragon poses a threat to these facilities due to the uprooting of plastic covers and iron structures and the destruction of crops, which doubles the financial burden on farmers and makes them in need of support and compensation to resume their agricultural activities.
