Security Council holds first colored preliminary vote to select UN Secretary-General
The Security Council held its first colored preliminary vote to choose Guterres's successor, with Rebecca Greenspan leading.

The UN Security Council held its first "colored" preliminary vote on Friday to select a successor to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose term ends at the end of this year. Costa Rican candidate Rebecca Greenspan topped the results with 9 affirmative votes, 5 against, and 1 abstention, while Rafael Grossi and Caroline Rodriguez Berket each received 8 affirmative votes, 6 against, and 1 abstention.

In the same context, Greek representative Aglaya Pelta noted that results would be communicated to candidates via country representatives, indicating no date has been set for the next round. For his part, US representative Mike Waltz clarified that his country welcomes the best candidate regardless of gender, while considering regional rotation.

Macky Sall received 5 affirmative votes and 10 against, Olara Otunnu received 4 affirmative, 10 against, and 1 abstention, Maria Fernanda Espinosa received 3 affirmative, 9 against, and 3 abstentions, and Yvonne Baki received 1 affirmative and 14 against. The vote gains significance as it is the first to use color coding, with red indicating opposition from the five permanent members.

He added that a candidate needs 9 affirmative votes without vetoes from permanent members, and the new Secretary-General is expected to be chosen in December next year to assume duties on January 1, 2027, for a five-year term.
