The Ministry of Agriculture is working to strengthen the local seed production system and develop the capacities of multiplier farmers through the Seed System Restoration in Syria (SSR) project. This initiative aims to improve the quality of certified seeds, restore their varietal purity, and secure the needs of agricultural regions with reliable seeds, thereby contributing to increased agricultural production and enhanced food security.
Mohammed Yasser Abars, the Production Director at the General Establishment for Seed Multiplication, explained that the project's importance lies in restoring the varietal purity of certified seeds and developing the expertise of multiplier farmers in managing fields dedicated to seed production. It also works to secure the needs of targeted regions with certified and reliable seeds.
Abars noted that the project contributes to developing the expertise of local farmers contracted with the establishment. This is achieved through the combined efforts of implementing partners, execution of demonstration fields, provision of technical support, and holding training courses and seminars that enhance farmers' knowledge in seed production and the application of good agricultural practices.
He added that high-quality seed production is achieved by supporting multiplier farmers contracted with the General Establishment for Seed Multiplication, according to specific technical conditions and tests approved by the establishment. This ensures the preservation of varietal purity, seed quality, and compliance with required specifications.
Abars emphasized that the project's success is measured by a set of indicators, including increased quantities of produced seeds, the number of multiplier farmers who received training, and the extent of their expertise development in seed production. Additionally, success is reflected in the increase in wheat cultivation areas and the quantities of grains delivered to the General Establishment for Grains.
The Ministry of Agriculture's five-year plan for 2026–2030 focuses on cultivating improved, high-yield varieties resistant to drought and diseases. It aims to develop an integrated production system adapted to climate change and water scarcity, ensuring the fulfillment of national needs and enhancing food security. The plan also includes breeding and introducing high-production varieties of main crops.
