Seville European Film Festival Launches 23rd Edition Tomorrow Friday
The 23rd Seville European Film Festival kicks off Friday with European and international films, running until November 14.

The 23rd edition of the Seville European Film Festival in Spain kicks off tomorrow Friday, featuring films from European and international productions, with screenings continuing until November 14. The program is distributed across competitions and diverse sections, including works previously shown at Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Annecy.

Diverse Competitive Program

The edition's program includes 15 films in the official competition, 12 works selected by the European Film Academy, as well as other competitive sections such as "Imbrocho," "Rampa," and "Alumbraiento." These sections present cinematic experiences ranging from narrative, documentary, and animation, highlighting new voices and contemporary trends in the industry.

Opening with "Long Live Carmen!"

The film program opens with the animated film "Long Live Carmen!" by French director Sébastien Laudenbach, a work inspired by Georges Bizet's opera, which is based on Prosper Mérimée's story. The film's events take place in the Spanish city of Seville during the 19th century, where a boy and street children attempt to protect the main character from a tragic fate.

Andalusian Presence and Honors

Andalusian cinema participates strongly with 66 local works, including 37 feature films and 29 shorts, including 21 world premieres. These works address themes of memory, identity, and traditions, as well as documenting flamenco. On another note, the festival awards Polish director Agnieszka Holland the "Honorary Giraldillo" in a separate event at 8:30 p.m.

The festival organizers announced the cancellation of the opening ceremony scheduled at the "Cartuja" center in solidarity with the victims of a train collision in the Urda area of the Toledo province, confirming that the rest of the program, including screenings and cultural activities, will continue in Seville city venues.
