Sierra Leonean Study: Pumpkin Seeds Improve Blood Sugar in Diabetic Women
A Sierra Leonean study indicates a modest improvement in blood sugar levels among women with type 2 diabetes after consuming pumpkin seed powder.

A recent study showed that adding pumpkin seed powder to the diet may help improve blood sugar levels in women with type 2 diabetes, highlighting the potential to utilize its nutritional components within dietary systems supporting disease management.

Researchers from Miltoun Margai Technical University, Njala University, and Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology in Sierra Leone stated in a study published in the "Asian Food Science Journal," a specialized food science journal, yesterday Thursday, that they tested the effect of adding pumpkin seed powder to the diet on blood sugar levels in women with type 2 diabetes.

The study included a nutritional intervention lasting 50 days, during which the intervention group consumed foods to which pumpkin seed powder was added, while the control group received the same foods without the powder. The results showed a modest improvement in blood sugar levels in the group that consumed pumpkin seed powder compared to the other group, with statistically significant differences recorded in the measurements conducted by the researchers.

The researchers pointed out that the results require further studies to confirm them and determine the extent of the effectiveness of pumpkin seeds in helping to regulate blood sugar, emphasizing that their nutritional use does not replace prescribed medication for diabetics. Pumpkin seeds are considered nutrient-rich foods, including fiber, minerals, and healthy fats, while research continues to evaluate their potential benefits and role in supporting health and preventing certain disorders, with the need for further studies to confirm their therapeutic effects.
