Sinner and Zverev at the Top of the Rankings
Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner retained the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings released on Monday, but the gap with his German rival Alexander Zverev has narrowed again, allowing for the possibility that the latter could surpass him by the end of this week. Sinner has not played since winning the last edition of Wimbledon and withdrew from the season finale due to a knee injury, paving the way for Zverev to aim for the top spot.
Zverev Closes In on the Top Spot
The 29-year-old German player won the Roland Garros and US Open titles this season, securing a No. 1 ranking finish for 2026. The gap between the two players is now just 700 points, and Zverev will become the world No. 1 if he reaches the quarterfinals of the upcoming Vienna 500 tournament. In the same context, 22-year-old French player Arthur Fils achieved the best ranking of his career by reaching the world No. 8, moving up two places, while Australian Alex de Minaur dropped to the 10th spot.
Rybakina Strengthens Her Lead Among Women
Among the women, Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, winner of the Ningbo 500 tournament on Sunday, strengthened her lead in the WTA rankings. The 27-year-old Kazakh, who secured her 15th career title in China, leads her Belarusian rival Aryna Sabalenka by 1,951 points, having overtaken her for the top spot in mid-September. Polish player Iga Swiatek, the former world No. 1, regained the eighth spot at the expense of Czech player Linda Noskova.
