The medical committee at the Homs branch of the General Social Insurance Institution evaluated seven work injury cases during its regular meeting on Wednesday, including five in the public sector and two in the private sector, in addition to five medical dismissal cases, aiming to assess health conditions and determine disability percentages according to established procedures.
For his part, the branch director of the Institution in Homs, Mohammed Nasser, clarified that the presented work injuries varied between fractures and ligament tears, while the medical dismissal cases included four cancer patients and one case of multiple sclerosis. He noted that the committee holds a monthly meeting during the last week of each month to study referred cases and follow up on work injuries and occupational diseases.
Compensation and Disability Determination Procedures
Nasser pointed out that a worker who stops working due to a work injury receives compensation equivalent to 80 percent of his monthly salary during the first month, then receives his full salary until he recovers or returns to work, according to established procedures. He noted that the department is responsible for estimating disability percentages resulting from work injuries, occupational diseases, and natural disability cases.
The head of the medical department, Dr. Manal Atiyeh, noted that the disability percentage is confirmed in a medical certificate sent to the General Audit Administration, and the worker is duly notified, retaining the right to object within 15 days from the date of notification. The objection will be studied according to established legal procedures.
A Worker's Experience
Manhal Atiyeh, a worker at the Jinder power station, explained that he suffered an injury to the third finger of his right foot while working and was transferred to the hospital for treatment. He later visited the Social Insurance branch to complete the required documents to refer his injury to the medical committee, praising the smooth medical and administrative procedures and the cooperation of the branch staff.
Medical committees contribute to evaluating health damages resulting from work injuries and occupational diseases and determining the associated disability percentages, helping to ensure workers' insurance rights and determine due compensation according to prevailing laws and regulations, while allowing the right to object to medical decisions within specified periods.
