Somalia condemns Israel’s appointment of ambassador in Hargeisa, calls it void
Somalia’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemns Israel’s appointment of an ambassador in Hargeisa, calling the move void and a violation of sovereignty.

Somalia strongly condemned, on Tuesday, Israel’s announcement of appointing an ambassador to the city of Hargeisa in the Somaliland region, and laying the cornerstone for what it calls its embassy on Somali territory, affirming that this measure is null and void.

The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement on the X platform that these measures, taken without the approval of the Somali Federal Government, constitute a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity, affirming its rejection as null and void and having no legal effect.

The Ministry affirmed that the city of Hargeisa in the Somaliland region remains an inseparable part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, clarifying that establishing diplomatic relations and setting up permanent diplomatic missions requires the consent of the sovereign state, as stipulated by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Ministry pointed out that these measures are an extension of Israel’s illegal recognition in December 2025, which was rejected by the African Union, IGAD, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, noting that amid escalating insecurity in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, measures encouraging fragmentation deepen tensions.

The Ministry called on all countries and international organizations to reject these measures and refrain from any dealings that would lend them any legitimacy, affirming that the Somali Federal Government reserves the right to take all appropriate diplomatic, political, and legal measures in accordance with international law.

It is worth noting that Israel announced mutual recognition with the Somaliland region on December 26, 2025, becoming the only country to take this step since the unilateral declaration of independence in 1991, and this announcement was met with widespread rejection from the international community and Arab and Islamic countries.

Israel announced on April 15, 2026, the appointment of an ambassador to the region, a step that Somalia responded to with firm rejection, considering it a blatant violation of international legitimacy and national sovereignty.
