Spanish police arrested more than 20 people, mostly minors, in connection with violent acts carried out by masked groups in the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country in the north of the country, where riots spread to include burning vehicles and containers and attempts to loot stores.
The events erupted on Monday evening after protesters gathered against an event organized by a social media celebrity described as far-right, while the Interior Minister of the Basque Country government, Bingen Zupiria, described the events as unacceptable, pointing to attempts to mimic acts of violence in Europe.
These developments come ahead of the early general elections scheduled for November 29 next, as the Spanish government and opposition parties exchange accusations regarding responsibility for these events, following previous violence in Barcelona that resulted in the arrest of 128 people.
