Spanish Study: Self-Bias Limits Accuracy of Our Predictions About Others' Tastes
A Spanish study reveals that self-bias leads us to misjudge others' tastes when assuming similarity.

A recent study has shown that personal preferences influence our judgments of others, limiting our accuracy in predicting what they like and choose when we assume they share the same tastes and interests as us.

The scientific website Phys.org reported on Saturday that researchers from Jaume I University in the Spanish city of Castellón de la Plana found that participants were more accurate in predicting the choices of hypothetical individuals when those individuals' preferences differed from the participants' own.

The study included two behavioral experiments involving 118 people, who were asked to identify the activities they preferred, and then predict the activities that hypothetical individuals and members of social groups, such as city and village residents, might choose, based on specific information and comparisons.

The results showed that participants tended to rely on their personal tastes when predicting others' choices, even when these tastes did not help them reach accurate predictions. Conversely, the accuracy of their predictions improved when the preferences of others differed from their own.

This can be illustrated with a simple example; a person who prefers to spend their holidays in cities may believe that others prefer them as well, while some prefer to spend their holidays in nature or in quiet places. This example shows that personal choices alone are insufficient to know what others prefer.

This tendency in psychology is known as egocentric bias, referring to a person's reliance on their own opinions and preferences when trying to understand others' choices, which may lead them to assume that others think in the same way or are drawn to the same things.

The study highlights the importance of considering individual differences when judging others, as understanding their preferences requires looking at their choices and circumstances independently, rather than assuming they match our own tastes and interests.
