Start of Rehabilitation of Irrigation Channels in Al-Ghab Plain
A joint project between the Ghab Authority and FAO to rehabilitate channels, reducing waste and improving water transfer efficiency for crops.

The General Authority for the Management and Development of Al-Ghab, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), began today, Tuesday, a project to rehabilitate the box canal and irrigation channels in the Al-Ghab Plain. This project aims to reduce irrigation water waste and improve the efficiency of transferring water from the main canal to the subsidiary canals within the irrigation network.

Rehabilitation and Maintenance Works

The Authority’s Director, Abdul Aziz Al-Qasim, told SANA that the works include removing dust, sediments, weeds, and accumulated obstacles inside the canal, as well as treating damaged parts of the tiles and concrete walls. The project also involves repairing cracks and leak sites to reduce irrigation water loss, and rehabilitating water structures associated with the canal, such as culverts, inlets, and outlets.

Completion Timeline and Benefited Areas

Al-Qasim noted that the project includes rehabilitating sections connected to the main canal G3 and canal G4, expecting the completion of rehabilitation works for the box canal and canal G4, and the restart of the main canal G3, by the end of the current year. The area of agricultural land benefiting from the restart of the canal amounts to approximately 8,000 hectares.

Project Impact on Farmers

Farmers in the Al-Ghab area confirmed that the project will have a positive impact on the agricultural season and production, as the regular arrival of water helps carry out agricultural operations at appropriate times. Farmers Mustafa Abdul Rahman and Muhammad Darwish explained that the rehabilitation ensures the provision of necessary irrigations for crops during their different growth stages and reduces exposure to water stress.
